THE MILLENNIUM HAS COME

(This essay has been published in the Newspaper Akþam dated January7, 2000)

While we are entering the new millennium, we should not forget that no matter how fast time passes, no matter how global the world gets, the societies are still living with their traditions, taboos and conditionings.

Even if the customs, traditions, and habits cause some  differentiation between the communal life styles, they never make a visible difference.

On the other hand, in spite of the fact that the customs and the traditions form a common character among the societies, there is still the expectation for the new!…

Now, a new year has come…

The subject is passing from a year with lots of figures to a similar one again with lots of figures…

However, this time it is very different…

The 2000’s!…

This period is the focal point of all the expectations. As a matter of fact its foundations were made by Albert Einstein, who as a scientist had put his stamp over the last century. One important point is that, at the beginning of this period it is important to choose the right  objective.

We are stepping into an age in which there aren’t any limits for the technology.  While many of the communication giants are investing in technology, the digital revolution is making its own rules. Internet is demolishing the visa procedures between the nations and you can become more global by using  your computer.  It looks as if there is no difference between having a web site in the abstract universe and opening an office or a shop somewhere in the world…

This is a period in which the world wide web  is covering all the regions. The people are able to save themselves from the phorno web sites and orient themselves towards other subjects in which they are interested. They can go through thousands of interconnected web sites  by using the search engines and have an amazing observation.

This is a wonderful opportunity for adding colour to one’s life in all aspects. However,  even though these prevailing conditions are wonderful, there are still places where there is a low rate of literacy with a low rate of  book reading. The number of people who can touch the ‘’enter’’ button of the computer are still a minority. There are some who are unaware of the communication technique named as the ‘’e-mail’’ and who still go on trying to paste the stamps on the envelopes. The carry phones are extremely expensive even though the people have somehow developed the ability to use them. So, under these conditions what would they be receiving from the millennium!…

In my opinion only those who could make a good use of the possibilities could catch the era of change by a quarter and have reached the state of  formative  expectation…

Millennium is not a mysterious dilemma, but a time for keeping  phase with the new…

In this era;

- The sun will still rise from the east,

- the cosmic influences will bring peace, fight and war,

- the world will continue its tours around the Sun as it has done during  the last four hundred billion years,

- roses of  various colours in the gardens would be growing,

- the physical bodies would be preferred to the spiritual selves,

- people would try to melt in the same pot both the science and the gossip,

- the film, ‘’Planet of the Apes’’ in which we can see the striking reflections of  Einstein’s theory of relativity, would still be valid even though it is a science fiction,

- the inflation would go on sucking the marrow from the bones of the people,

- the scientists will continue their works for advancement,

- in the mystical area the behaviour  which is even not chosen by the scorpions would still be valid,

- the Egyptians will go on believing in the power of the star Sirius (a very bright star) which causes the flood of the river Nile and they will keep on watching its rise and do their agricultural works accordingly in order not to fall into the hands of starvation,

- the camel would be ridden by what has been gained from getting used to a ceratin place,

- a differentiation between the good and the bad would be made, however both of them would be measured on the same scale,

- all the people would be believing that Hz.Jesus who had said ‘’I would be on this earth two thousands years later at the age of thirty three’’ is among us. However, Hz.Jesus had said this according to the moon calendar and there is a difference of ten days between the two.

- As it has been the case in every period, the possessors of science would be the saints,

- From now on no other prophet would be coming, however there would still be the expectations for the Mahdi (the saviour),

- Mercury would be completing its tour around the Sun in eighty-eight days. While doing so it will be completing nearly four more tours in comparison to the earth which can complete its tour only in one year,

- Pluton will complete its tour around the Sun in a slow motion and its one year would be equal to the 248 years that we have…

All of these, can they change because we have entered the new millennium?…

Of course not!…

What is important is to abstract oneself from the taboos, accept the change with the intuition that all the concepts are forms in reality and make maximum use of the new changes.

It is necessary to see that happiness is not only in ecstasy but in unhappiness as well; it is also necessary to become aware of the difference and get adapted to change and renewal. This is a fact which we cannot avoid…

If the technology can be perceived through these qualities which are composed of  knowledge, experience and culture, then the understanding of transformation would be caught.

However, while entering the age of  change keep a candle in your homes…

Do not forget that you are in Turkey…
